In the south of Spain, between Gibraltar and Marbella, lies the mountain village of Gaucin; a privileged place to live, with stunning sierras, green valleys and breathtaking views of the sea and Africa. Gaucin (click for map), this beautiful village and surrounding area has attracted many discerning people from around the world. It is the perfect retreat from an ever busy world and yet only 20 minutes drive away from the Costa del Sol highway.
HRS is situated in 100 hectares of wild forest and is the lifelong hideaway dream house built by a retired Spanish diplomat and his wife. He wanted enough land for their own private kingdom, with space for riding and, as president of one of the finest golf clubs in Spain, he built his own 9 hole golf course to keep a grip on the game and entertain his many guests.
HRS stands on the banks of the fertile Genal river valley and overlooks the scenic Monte Crestellina and Sierra Bermeja nature reserves. It is a unique and beautiful property and, as no more construction is allowed in the surrounding countryside, there are only a few smart country houses scattered around.
The property consists of four buildings with a total of 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms and a 2-1/2 bedroom staff house, totalling approximately 1,000 sq meters of living area and 500 sq metres of terraces and patios. Some of the buildings could be converted into a few more bedrooms.
A stream, Arroyo del Alba runs through the property, and feeds two lakes totalling 1,500 m2. one of which is by the golf course and the other next to the orchard which contains a veritable selection of fruit trees. ( Orange, lemon, fig, pomegranate, grapefruit, olive, avocado, loquat and some more.) There are also 5 wells.
The drive
A smooth 2 km dirt track winds its way to the first entrance gate, past a small brook and up through a pine tree forest to a second impressive electric gate. It then passes the 7th hole of the private golf course, the bell tower of the house appearing behind a magnificent ancient oak tree and set against the endless background of the Sierra Bermeja nature reserve to the east and the distant village of Gaucin perched on its mountain.
The Main house
The bell tower, with the family crest, overlooks the Andalusian courtyard. The sitting room and study and the beautiful dining room are on the righthand side and the dining patio faces north east so as to enjoy the cool during the hot summer months.
On the ground floor are 2 bedrooms with bathrooms. (The master suite has 2 bathrooms). Upstairs is a third bedroom and bathroom.
There is a vast kitchen with every modern convenience, plus a pantry area, laundry room etc. and a separate staff entrance with parking for several cars.
A large wine cellar and a guest cloakroom are also off the courtyard.
The two storey library is one of the finca’s most magnificent features. It contains nearly 6.000 books most of which are included in the sale.
The swimming pool is 200 m away from the main house set within the most beautiful and mature gardens.
The two storey guest house.
Out of sight from the main house the guest house has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, a sitting-dining room with kitchen and a courtyard outside dining area. There is parking for several cars.
The chapel
The chapel includes a magnificent copy of the original family triptych of San Roman, a national treasure the original of which is in Barcelona at the family seat.
The Staff house
With 2 1/2 bed and 2 bathrooms, the staff house is adjacent to the 3 box stables and overlooks the nearby paddock. Horse Riding in the region is sheer paradise. There is a 15 km river track along the Genal river down to the sea at Sotogrande, the capital of European polo.
There is parking space for more than 20 cars.
Heating
There are three large fireplaces with enough fire wood on the property and there are electric radiators in every room.
The private golf course
The golf course has 3 par-4 and 4 par-3 holes. Two of the holes can be played twice from different Tees to make it a 9 hole golf course.
